Tonight, I took a stroll off campus to buy a card and get some dinner. The walk through campus was fine until I hit the University Gates. Then I saw them … the people with the big pictures of aborted fetuses across the street from the Gates, right near the restaurant I was attempting to get to. On the other side of the street, there were two women with flyers.
And that’s when I made a series of mistakes:
- Mistake 1: Assuming that the women with flyers were a pro-choice group.
- Mistake 2: Walking by the two women.
- Mistake 3: Answering a question from the two women.
- Mistake 4: Taking their flyer. Honestly, I was just trying to get past them. I even had on my iPod when they started yakking at me.
You guessed it. They were with the pro-life folks across the street. After I took the flyer, I stuffed it in my pocket and kept walking. I didn’t want to engage with them. Seriously, that should have been the end of it. Nope! They started yelling after me as I walked down the street:
They kill babies at Planned Parenthood on Thursdays!
Don’t you care?
That’s tomorrow!
They are killing babies tomorrow!
Holy shit! I thought this was supposed to be a liberal college town. Where did these freaks come from? All I wanted was to be alone with my thoughts, get my noodles, and come back to my hotel room to study my Language notes. Geez. I ended up dunking into a Card Shop where I picked up a bumper sticker and asked the clerk to throw away the flyer. She was very happy to oblige.
At least they were gone by the time I bought my noodles. Pad Thai with tofu. And — this is for TQE — yeah, don’t waste your money there. I could make better noodles at home.
aaaahhh!!! i hate those people. they make me cringe.
as for your noodles…i’ve wanted to attempt a noodle place by my university gates…but i’ve never chucked up the nerve to…too afraid. now, i think you’ve confirmed the my noodle fear. yucko.
Gee, when will these religious wackos start to learn that their right to free speech ends once a person has declined to listen? Once you’ve declined to listen ceases being speech and instead becomes harassment.
I tend to agree with you, CQ. I really hate pushy people (from both sides of the spectrum). It’s obnoxious.
Koko: Yeah, don’t bother. Trust me. People in my class said the same thing about that place.
at least near university gates there are awesome local coffee shops, burrito shops, and… even, in many cases, pizza!
