Yesterday, I wore my new Hillary ‘08 hat to work. Isn’t it just adorable? It even matched my outfit, but it kind of clashes with my pink gloves. I even had comments about it from a few people. Woot! People in my neck of the academic woods are actually starting to support Hillary more. People who told me months and months ago that they were Obama fans are now telling me that they’ve decided to vote for Hillary instead based on the debates. Amazing! And today? The New York Times has endorsed her for the primary season. The op-ed piece states:
The potential upside of a great Obama presidency is enticing, but this country faces huge problems, and will no doubt be facing more that we can’t foresee. The next president needs to start immediately on challenges that will require concrete solutions, resolve, and the ability to make government work. Mrs. Clinton is more qualified, right now, to be president.
Finally, someone is writing about the practical realities of being president! I have been so annoyed by all of these stories that keep focusing on the fact that Clinton’s a woman (How novel!) or that Barack is an African-American (See how far we’ve come as a nation?) or the fact that Romney is a Mormon (How dangerous!). It’s so easy to get sucked into these things, especially when we’re used to having WASP male presidents. Yes, I admit that I like the idea of having a female president — it’s about damned time — but that’s not the reason why I have thrown my stocking cap into this particular arena. I mean, if it was only a gender thing, I would have supported Elizabeth Dole when she was all about the presidency. {Ack!}
A final note: I wanted to wear my t-shirt yesterday, but it has been too damned cold here to venture forth without a ton of clothes on. Plus, I had a meeting with the dean which required me to dress like a grown up, especially since I wasn’t quite sure what he was going to talk to me about. I always want to dress professionally if I think there’s an ass-chewing on the horizon. (Don’t worry – there wasn’t.) Oh, and I also got the signed copy of my committee’s reappointment letter which ended with a sentence like this one: “Dr. Disenchanted is on track to receive tenure …” Always a good sign, especially since I will be going up next year. That last article really helped my case.
