Welcome to Disenchanted’s Christmas Break where all pretense of working went out the window after those final grades were filed on Monday morning. Granted, I did:
- Spend a little time working on my graduate syllabus on Monday;
- Spend my Monday night cooking with Former Student;
- Spend my Tuesday morning lazing around with a book that I bought from a bargain table {and halfway through the book I realized that I had already read it — and indeed, I even own a copy};
- Spend my Tuesday afternoon going out for World Famous Fried Chicken {seriously, the best chicken ever – just ask Gourmet}; and
- Spend today basking in the joy of my {eek!} 39th birthday.
Of course, today didn’t work out quite as planned. The Coach started out good: he bought me the Alton Brown book I’ve been dying to have and a remote control meat thermometer. Yes, I asked for the thermometer, so he is not in the dog house. We sat around the house for a little bit, then I went out and dropped $92 on my car {ouch} so it would be in tip top shape for our cross country journey. Duringthis time, The Coach did some laundry and dealt with our f***ing FlexAccount. Good thing he got that all cleared up because our day derailed at the mall when we stopped to see if his glasses could be repaired.
Uh, no.
Of course, LensCrafters doesn’t carry that brand anymore. Oh, and it would have been $200 to fix the old sunglasses. WTF? So, I convinced The Coach to bite the bullet and he scheduled a last minute eye appointment. Oh yes, we couldn’t use his old prescription because, you know, it was expired. I ended up waiting around his eyeballs were photographed, then we ate at a TGIFriday’s while his glasses were churned out. Now, originally we were going to go to my new favorite local joint for lunch, but the EyeGlasses Gods plotted against us. Oh well. At least the TGIF’s comped our appetizer …
We came home and I had a nice birthday nap. You see, I fell asleep while Lunar Park — which is an oddly intriguing book. {Originally, I was going to re-read Less than Zero, but I couldn’t find a copy at the local Borders} Then I sent The Coach out to buy a birthday pizza. We watched a little Alton Brown. We were lazy. Nothing work-related has been touched.
And as soon as I post this blog entry, I am going downstairs to make a pumpkin pie, watch The Nightmare Before Christmas, and eat birthday cake. Later, we’ll snuggle up under the electric blanket and go to sleep, dreaming of “Fra-gil-e” leg lamps and BB guns.
Fried Chicken sounds good… yum!
That place is wicked awesome. It’s one of two places that Former Student wanted to go when he got back from the left coast.
